FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Where do I install my XiumAir
Antenna?
Basically, you may
install your XiumAir Antenna in the same location as your previous outdoor
antenna, or in an attic, on solid wood studs, brick or concrete, or on a
chimney. Do not install over weakened aluminum siding.
Is it difficult to install?
The XiumAir is not
difficult to install. All you would need is a Philips screwdriver and good
sturdy ladder. I would also recommend a second person to assist in the
final tuning before finally tightening any of the adjustment screws. This
allows for optimum tuning for each of the channels in your area.
Where do I point the XiumAir for the
best tuning?
The XiumAir is an
omni-directional non-amplified antenna. No pointing or tuning should be
necessary. However, we have found that pointing the XiumAir dish
"away" from the TV stations, you would in many cases, receive
better quality reception. The XiumAir utilizes the dish as a reflective
ground for the spilateral unit located on the front of the dish. Most
would assume that the dish is used as a parabolic reflector, but that is
not the case with spilateral technology. In field testing, we like to
position the dish in a central direction from all of the available
broadcast towers. This allows us optimum test results for obtaining the
best reception.
When mounting the "Spilateral"
unit onto the Reflector, do I put the cable "F" connector from
the "Spilateral" unit through the hole located on the
"U" Shaped bracket before mounting?
No. The hole on
the "U" shaped bracket is only used if the dish is not being
utilized. The "U" shaped bracket is positioned at the bottom of
the "Spilateral" unit (refer
to page 2; Step 4 of the Installation Manual).
The "F" connector located on the "Spilateral" unit
would go through the "Reflector", then fastened to the
"Reflector" using the supplied nut that is already located on
the "F" connector. No holes should be drilled through the rubber
strip inside of the "U" shaped bracket. The rubber strip is used
for additional support for the "Spilateral" unit.
I have the entire XIumAir installed.
But I am not getting any reception on any channel. Where do I begin
looking for the problem?
The best place to
begin looking would be at the connector on the "Spilateral"
unit. First, check the "F" connector on the "Spilateral"
unit to make sure it does not turn. If the "F" connector nut is
tightened too much, the "F" connector will break away from the
"Spilateral" internal circuitry, losing the connection.
Secondly, make sure the center lead wire from the connecting cable is
properly inserted into the "F" connector on the "Spilateral"
unit and into the TV. Thirdly, make sure the TV is switched to the
"Off-Air Antenna" mode. This may be done through the menu
setting on the TV. It is very important that the TV is not in the "CATV"
mode, or signal will be drastically reduced.
Is it necessary to rotate the
XiumAir Antenna for all of my channels?
No. Once the XiumAir
is installed, check each of your channels for reception quality. Grounding
the "Spilateral" unit will clean most of the reception problems.
(For
proper grounding techniques, please refer to Step 2, page 3 of the
Installation Manual.)
Does the XiumAir need additional
grounding besides 'earth' ground for my mast?
Yes. It is
recommended that the "F" connector on the Xium "Spilateral"
unit be grounded separately to another source of metal, preferably a vent
or air duct to provide a separate grounding for the incoming TV signals (please
refer to page 3, Section 2 - "Pre-Installation Test and Proper
Grounding").
Both grounds will serve as two separate functions. The 'earth' ground will
give safety for lightning protection, and the 'RF' ground will allow an
increased ground for stronger TV signals.
What if I get the XiumAir
installed and find that I am only receiving VHF, but not my UHF channels?
In many cases, the
XiumAir antenna will need to have a "Signal Combiner" installed
between the XiumAir and the TV. A "Signal Combiner" allows you
to combine both VHF and UHF signals together for your TV set. This would
also be the case if you were only receiving UHF and not VHF signals. A
"Signal Combiner" would be available at most any local Radio
Shack or other electronics retailer.
I use to have cable or satellite,
before I purchased the XiumAir. It is completely installed, but I am not
able to receive any of my local broadcast. What should I do?
In many cases,
when DSS or cable was used previously, most TV's require that it be
switched to CATV or SATV. If this is the case, then your TV must be
switched back to Off-AIR or LOCAL. This switch allows for the local
signals to come in rather than CATV or satellite. The switch is usually
done through your TV's remote for on-screen programming. Most TV's have a
MENU selection on the TV or remote control.
